Select the MEDLINE or MEDLINE (UTF-8) export format to download and save your reference list as MEDLINE format. The former export format is ASCII-encoded, while the latter is UTF-8 encoded.
MEDLINE format is a tagged field format that displays all of the fields held in a Medline record for a journal reference. More information about MEDLINE format is available here on the NCBI website. Many reference management tools can accept MEDLINE format as an input.
A MEDLINE reference as output by Edifix looks like this:
PMID- 3806354
JT - Journal of Personality and Social Psychology
TA - J Pers Soc Psychol
DP - 1986
VI - 51
IP - 6
IS - 0022-3514
TI - The moderator-mediator variable distinction in social psychological research: conceptual, strategic, and statistical considerations.
PG - 1173-1182
AU - Baron,RM
AU - Kenny,DA
PT - JOURNAL ARTICLE
DO - DOI:10.1037/0022-3514.51.6.1173
SO - J Pers Soc Psychol. 1986;51(6):1173-1182.
For a list of Medline’s Data Element Field Descriptions (2-letter codes), see https://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/mms/medlineelements.html.
Note: Because MEDLINE only indexes journal content, only fully structured journal references are exported in MEDLINE format; other reference types and references that have not been fully parsed will not be included in the exported file.
